Dharma Publishing represents a unique phenomenon, a dual transmission of Buddhism from East to West and West to East, beginning in the 1960’s in the wake of the Chinese invasion of Tibet. In response to the immense destruction of Tibetan civilization, Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche began a printing press in Varanasi, India, which he christened Dharma Mudranalaya after the renowned printing establishment in East Tibet. From 1963-1967 this press operation produced around 20 books and marked the start of what we know today as Dharma Publishing. In 1968, Rinpoche reestablished Dharma Mudranalaya in America where it is comprised of two parts: a publishing company (Dharma Publishing) and printing operation (Dharma Press).

Our outreach to the West seeks to complement the Western understanding of mind. Unlike traditional publishers this outreach includes a range of programs that enhance readers’ engagement with, not just one or two books, but whole disciplines, including Dharma studies, Kum Nye Yoga, and Skillful Means. To unite this diverse range of activity, The Dharma Publishing Academy (DPA) was created, providing a gradual path of human development for interested readers through CDs, DVDs, retreats, seminars, and online classes. Through these efforts we hope to continue the transmission of Buddhism from East to West begun and guided by our founder.

We also play another important and remarkable role—contributing to the return of Dharma teachings from West to East, completing a globe spanning cycle of transmission. Proceeds from the sale of our products and retreats help fund the printing of Tibetan Buddhist texts, which are then distributed for free to over 3,300 monasteries in the Himalayan region during the annual World Peace Ceremony, in Bodh Gaya, India. Through this effort, current and future generations can preserve lineages of transmission that can be traced back to the Buddha Shakyamuni, over 2,500 years ago.

What a blessing! As one of the oldest, largest, and last remaining independent Buddhist publishers in America, we are amazed at all that can be accomplished with hard work, an inspiring vision, support and true guidance. We invite you stop by our bookstore, located in Berkeley, CA or to visit us on Facebook and share in our accomplishments, many of which would not be possible without the support of readers like you.

We hope that during your visit you find something that catches your attention and suggests ways to enrich your experience, deepen your understanding, and unfold your full potential. The purpose of all our books, art, and products is to provide fresh opportunities to make the most of this precious human life.

Your comments, questions, and interests are always welcome whether by phone, e-mail, or letter. You may like to visit Ratna Ling Retreat Center, our home, for a retreat to study and practice, or even to live and volunteer with us. However we connect, we look forward to serving you in the years to come and wish you the best.

Many Blessings,

The Dharma Publishing Staff
